How to write this resume

Lead with education

As a student, your education section should come first. Include GPA if it's 3.0+ and relevant coursework.

Include projects

Personal projects, class projects, and hackathons count. Treat them like work experience with descriptions and outcomes.

Transfer skills from any job

Your barista job taught you customer service, multitasking, and teamwork. Frame non-technical jobs in terms of transferable skills.

Write a targeted summary

Mention the specific internship type you're seeking and what you bring. Generic objectives ('seeking a challenging role') hurt more than help.

Key skills to include

  • Programming languages (Python, Java, JavaScript)
  • Version control (Git/GitHub)
  • Problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Written and verbal communication
  • Time management and organization
  • Team collaboration
  • Basic database knowledge (SQL)
  • Research and analysis
  • Adaptability and willingness to learn
  • Customer service experience

Common mistakes

  • Having an empty experience section — include any job, campus role, or volunteer work
  • Not including personal or class projects
  • Writing a generic objective statement instead of a targeted summary
  • Including high school information when you're in college (unless you're a freshman)
